How stigma disrupts safe, accessible abortion services

Presented by

ADSRI and the National Centre for Epidemiolgy & Population Health, ANU.

Dr Anu Kumar is Executive Vice President of Ipas, a global nongovernmental organisation dedicated to ending preventable deaths and disabilities from unsafe abortion. Through local, national and global partnerships, Ipas works to ensure that women can obtain safe, respectful and comprehensive abortion care, including counselling and contraception to prevent future unintended pregnancies.

Dr Kumar joined Ipas in 2002 after serving for seven years as senior program officer in the Population and Reproductive Health area of the John D and Catherine T MacArthur Foundation. In that capacity, she oversaw grants to organizations working in India and to international organizations, as well as grants in the field of population and environment. Prior to her work with the MacArthur Foundation, Dr Kumar worked as a social scientist at the World Health Organization's Reproductive Health Research Division. From 1998-2001, she was adjunct assistant professor in the Maternal and Child Health Department at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
