This presentation consists of two parts. The first part provides an overview of the Philippines’ demographic transitions, tracing historical trends in fertility, mortality, and migration. The second part focuses on the emerging issue of population ageing, drawing on findings from the Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Health in the Philippines (LSAHP)—the first nationally representative panel study on older Filipinos.
The presentation highlights the health and economic challenges faced by the country’s ageing population, as well as the policies, programs, and interventions currently being implemented in response. Implications for future planning and policymaking are also discussed.
Grace T. Cruz is a Professor at the University of the Philippines Population Institute (UPPI) and currently serves as the Principal Investigator of the Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Health in the Philippines (LSAHP), the first nationally representative panel study on older Filipinos.
She also chaired the Inter-Agency Committee on Population Projections, which produced estimates of the Philippine population for the next 35 years based on the 2020 Census of Population and Housing. Her research interests include population ageing, large-scale survey implementation, and technical demography.
