The world’s most famous demographer, noted for his ground-breaking work on fertility, mortality and the spread of disease in South Asia and Africa, died on 12 March 2016 aged 87 years. His death is a sad loss to the demographic community and the Australian National University.
Professor John Charles Caldwell AO (Jack) completed his PhD degree in demography at ANU. He was Head of the Department of Demography from 1970 to 1988 and later the Head of NCEPH’s Health Transition Centre.
