Marie McAuliffe
A 2014 Sir Roland Wilson scholarship has been awarded to an ADSRI PhD scholar, Marie McAuliffe. This is the second Sir Roland Wilson scholarship to go to an ADSRI PhD scholar, following Nerida Hunter’s 2011 scholarship prize.
The Sir Roland Wilson scholarships are amongst the most prestigious in the country and offer high achieving public servants the opportunity to make an active contribution to academic discourse that is of direct and enduring relevance to the Australian Public Service.
The Sir Roland Wilson Foundation was established in 1998 with donations from ANU and the Wilson family estate to advance the study and development of public policy and management within Australia and internationally. Since its establishment the Foundation has been providing scholarships and prizes for students at ANU, as well as hosting the annual Sir Roland Wilson Public Lecture, which has become one of the most significant economic policy events in the Canberra calendar.
Next year’s Sir Roland Wilson scholar, Marie McAuliffe, commenced in the Department of Immigration and Border Protection in 2000 and has worked in the department’s offices in Canberra, Seoul and Moscow. For three years (2012–2014), Marie managed the department’s largest research program as well as a research/analytical function on irregular migration.
Marie’s own research work focuses on the conceptualisation of international migration, and irregular maritime migration specifically. She has recently published papers on migrant decision-making, Sri Lankan irregular migration, global irregular maritime migration and environmentally-related international migration. Marie’s research examines the migration patterns, processes and factors involved in irregular maritime migration to Australia between 2008 and 2013 of Afghan Hazaras and Sri Lankan Tamils. Her supervisory panel comprises Professor James Raymer, Professor Jalal Abbasi-Shavazi, Professor Graeme Hugo and Peter Hughes.
