Dr Wai Yip Ho is a Chinese sociologist from the Department of Social Sciences, Hong Kong Institute of Education. He has pioneered research on China’s Muslim networking on the Chinese web during his visit to ADSRI (May to September 2014). Wai Yip Ho will present some of his research findings at a seminar on 22 August.
His research interests include the new media and China’s Islam, the emerging Arab diaspora to China, Gulf-China relations and China’s Christian-Muslim relations.
Wai Yip Ho provides the following brief report on his visit to ADSRI.
Generously supported by the Australian Government Endeavour Research Fellowship, I have been hosted by ADSRI. It has given me the opportunity to study the relationship of China’s Hui Muslims and the web. Collaborating with Dr Robert Ackland and attending his course, Online Research Methods, we have pioneered the exploration and analysis of Muslim networking on the Chinese web.
During my stay, I have had the great privilege of organising the very successful research workshop, 'Studying the Chinese Internet' (研究中国互联网/研究中國互聯網) held at ANU from 31 July – 1 August 2014 and co-organised by ADSRI and the Australian Centre on China in the World.
While visiting ADSRI I have found my colleagues very kind and helpful. Through Monday morning teas and other informal conversations, I have learnt about colleagues’ research works, which are impressive and stimulating. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr Robert Ackland and Professor James Raymer for the invitation to visit, and ADSRI generally for their kind hospitality. My gratitude also goes to Dr Adrian Hayes, Jenny White,Louise Sims and Christel Cools. Their kindness and help means a lot in my everyday work at ADSRI. I am looking forward of visiting ADSRI again in future.
