Asian Population Association Conference
Friday 21 September 2012

The 2ndAsian Population Association (APA) Conference was held in Bangkok from 26 -29 August and successfully convened more than 600 participants from 50 countries to share their ideas and experiences on population issues across Asia. In addition to the participation of many young demographers, the presence of distinguished international and Asian scholars was valuable and contributed to the high quality of the proceedings. The attendance of representatives from UN agencies, government organizations and NGOs was important for networking and policy impact. ADSRI and demography at ANU were very well represented with many current and former staff, students and visitors attending. Papers by ADSRI staff, adjuncts and students are listed below.

Around 400 papers were presented at 100 regular sessions and around 300 papers were displayed in poster sessions. The two plenary sessions on Future of low fertility in Asia and Asians on the move were stimulating and raised many research questions that will give direction for research in years to come. The strong message emerging from the conference was that ‘population matters’. Governments and policy makers need to rely more on evidence-based policies in their planning to address future population and development trends.

Establishment and management of the Asian Population Association

The initial discussion of the establishment of an Asian population association, through an online forum, led to an establishment committee in 2007 which included two members of ADSRI, Professor Mohammed Jalal Abbasi-Shavazi and Professor Terry Hull. The first meeting of this committee was held at the University of Tehran in 2007 where the constitution was drafted.  The APA was then registered in Bangkok and the first council organised the first conference of the association in New Delhi in November 2010. The association now has around 1300 members from across Asia and beyond.

ADSRI is well represented on the current APA Council with Professor Abbasi-Shavazi (President), Professor Hull (Vice President) and Dr Bhakta Gubhaju (Council Member).  Professor Hull and Dr Meimanat Hosseini have both been nominated for the next APA Council election with Professor Hull being nominated for President.  The election will be held online during October and November 2012.
