Latin America and the Caribbean have experienced rapid demographic change over the past century, marked by sustained fertility decline, improvements in life expectancy, and shifting migration patterns. Although these processes are often described as part of a compressed demographic transition, they have not unfolded uniformly across countries. Differences in the timing, pace, and configuration of demographic change reflect persistent structural inequalities and the region’s diverse social and institutional contexts. This project examines how demographic change unfolds across countries and how distinct demographic regimes emerge, taking a comparative regional perspective.
Claudia Avila-Schmalko is a PhD student in Demography at the Australian National University. She completed a Master of Social Research Methods at ANU and has a background in social research and public policy. Her work focuses on the intersection between demographic change and social inequality in Latin America. Claudia is funded by the Carlos Antonio López (BECAL) scholarship awarded by the Paraguayan government.
