Data quality and accessibility in Asia

Terence Hull
In the 1980s the censuses and surveys of China, Indonesia and many other Asian countries appeared to be improving in terms of the professionalism of statistical agencies. Since then there have been increasing complaints from data users. In part these reflect a failure of the agencies to release data in a form that can take advantage of modern computer technologies and emerging analytical methods. But there are also complaints about the decline in coverage and reliability of census results. Professor Hull is working with colleagues in Asia to define directions to improve the quality and accessibility of data. This will be developed in collaboration with the Australian Data Archives.
