On 23 October 2014, ADSRI and the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research (CAEPR) hosted a one-day symposium on ‘new ideas and challenges for demographic research in Australia'. This event was sponsored by the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences for the purpose of bringing together academics, practitioners and policy makers to share and discuss ideas on the types of research needed to identify the important demographic changes occurring in Australia and the possible implications these will have for the future. Each presenter was given 15 minutes to present their ideas and answer questions in one of four sessions covering (i) academic research priorities, (ii) government research priorities, (iii) data availability, access and linkage, and (iv) new and emerging methods.
The symposium was followed by a one-day workshop on 24 October consisting of academic demographers from ANU, Macquarie, Monash and the University of Queensland who discussed ideas for cross-institutional collaboration in research and demographic training.
The organisers of the symposium and workshop were Heather Booth (ADSRI), Nicolas Biddle (CAEPR), Ann Evans (ADSRI), Edith Gray (ADSRI) and James Raymer (ADSRI).
