Youth Migration and Human Capital Development in Indonesia

Migration not only depicts the movement of people but also signifies the relocation of human capital. Migration is influenced by various factors, including age and education. The effect of age is shown through the domination of young adult migrants, while education has consistently shown a positive association with migration behaviour. Since migration plays a prominent role in affecting human capital accumulation and redistribution, examining the education-specific processes of youth migration is critical to understand its implications on human capital development. Indonesia is important for studying this topic due to its location, population size, and variations in demographic dynamics and economic development. Although age and educational selectivities of migration have been extensively studied in the Indonesian context, little is known about the interaction between education trajectories, migration processes, and human capital development in the country. This thesis contributes to the literature by providing a more nuanced understanding of the migration-education nexus. In this final seminar, I will present several new insights into the relationships between migration and human capital development in the Indonesian context. Anticipated contributions and policy implications from the findings will also be discussed.
