Five of ADSRI's PhD candidates have submitted their theses between December 2012 and March 2013.

Kien Van Nguyen

Kien submitted his thesis, Social capital, livelihood diversification and households’ resilience to floods in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta, at the end of 2012 and has since returned to Vietnam.

Safrina Thristiawati

Safrina submitted her thesis, Socio-cultural dimension of gendered wellbeing of older persons in Lampung, Indonesia, in February.

Pungkas Ali

Pungkas Ali conducted his PhD project, Healthcare utilisation in Indonesia: Determinants and projections, under the supervision of Professor Peter McDonald and Professor Terence Hull. The research explored various demographic and non-demographic factors relating to low use of healthcare services in Indonesia. It also examined the roles of provider characteristics such as price, quality of service and distance from health facilities in determining the preference of healthcare utilization and provider choice and examined healthcare utilization inequity. Therefore, it dealt with both demand and supply side of healthcare utilization. The second part of the research dealing with population projection as well as projection healthcare utilisation by accommodating the change in demography, morbidity and health insurance subscription. The research gained the benefits from full access to Susenas (National Social Economic Survey) data sets kept and maintained by ADSRI. Pungkas submitted his thesis in March.

Prior to commencing his PhD in 2009, Pungkas worked with the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas)/ The Ministry of National Development Planning in Jakarta as a planner with his last position as the Division Head in the Directorate of Health and Community Nutrition. He is now working in Bappenas and is continuing his role as the planner in the formulation of national development policy in human development, including health, nutrition, education, and population. He also will continue his work in other areas such as water and sanitation, social protection and early child development.

Diahhadi Setyonaluri

Luri submitted her thesis, Women interrupted: Determinants of women’s employment exit and return in Indonesia, in March.

Imma Aryanty

Imma also submitted her thesis, Abortion in Yogyakarta: Characteristics, Hospitalisation and Estimates, in March.
