Documentary on young adults in Jakarta
Thursday 25 February 2016

Dr Iwu Utomo is filming a documentary on how many young people in Greater Jakarta struggle to make ends meet.

To support their families, young couples with lower levels of education have to develop their own small informal food business. These businesses include operating as a street food vendor, a small Padang (West Sumatra food) restaurant or a small shop.

This is contrasted with young people with higher education levels who have good jobs and salaries. Some of these young people, for example, work in advertising or television or for an international airline or are pursuing higher education.

Dr Utomo is working closely with Heru Suparno and Ferdinand Siagian from University of Indonesia and Ida Rosyidah from State Islamic University Jakarta. This documentary is part of Dr Utomo's research on the Transition to Adulthood in Indonesia project.
