Sweden 10 Million – with many well-recorded demographic events

Sweden 10 Million – with many well-recorded demographic events

In January 2017, Sweden reached the benchmark of 10 million inhabitants. The Stockholm University Demography Unit (SUDA) took this as a cause for celebration and the opportunity to showcase the demography of Sweden. In this presentation I give a brief overview of Sweden’s journey from a country of fewer than 1 million people to what it is today. Fortunately, the infrastructure to cover this development in terms of demographic data is exceptionally good. This holds for historical as well as for modern time. The presentation high-lights a few trends where Sweden and the other Nordic countries have acted as forerunners in demographic change. It also provides an introduction to some of the main research projects at the Demography Unit in Stockholm.

Gunnar Andersson is Professor in Demography and Head of the Stockholm University Demography Unit (SUDA). He is also Associate Director of the Linnaeus Center on Social Policy and Family Dynamics in Europe (SPaDE) and coordinates the Stockholm University SIMSAM Node for Demographic Research (SUNDEM), as part of the Swedish Initiative for research on Microdata in the Social and Medical Sciences (SIMSAM).
